This initiative was hosted and coordinated by Co Kildare Community and Voluntary Forum Ltd. (www.kildarecommunityforum.ie)

The Co. Kildare Community and Voluntary Forum hosted a very successful forum meeting on Wednesday 29th June, in Toughers, Newhall, Naas.

With 2011 being the European Year of Volunteering, the Chairperson, Dermot O’Donnell, invited individual volunteers and the Forum’s 600+ affiliated organisations to come up with ideas and suggestions on an appropriate manner to acknowledge and thank all volunteers in the county.

P.J. Fagan from the Irish Red Cross in his address to the AGM said that “volunteers in our community are the unsung heroes who deserved to be honoured for their hard work, dedication and commitment ”.

A meeting is to be held of key strategic stakeholders to examine how best to mark 2011 as European Year of Volunteering in Co. Kildare.

Informative presentations were made by representatives of several diverse voluntary organisations providing services in the Kildare Area. The objectives of the presentations included highlighting awareness of activities and reinforcing how, by cooperating, we can be more effective for the benefit of the community at large.

The presentations were given by Margharita Solon, Nas na Riogh Housing Association, Greg Fogarty, Kildare Suicide Bereavement Support Group, Catherine Byrne and Debbie Garry from Foroige, who offer drug awareness courses to voluntary groups. All the speakers on the night made reference to the commitment and dedication of the volunteers who make up their groups and associations.

We are grateful to PJ Fagan who led on this initiative for Kildare Area Red Cross. Click this link to view the presentation given on the night.
